Psalm 95:4&5 says, “In His hands are the depths of the earth; the heights of the mountains are His also. The sea is His, for He made it, and His hands formed the dry land.”

Creation cannot help but testify to the immeasurable power of God. For that reason I love reading the Psalms. Verses that take creation, the handiwork of God, and make it seem so small in comparison to Him remind me of my human frailty. He holds the depths of the earth in his hands… How awesome is that? Sometimes though, I think we all need glimpses into how God is living and active TODAY. Yes, He is constantly sustaining our universe, our planet, and each of our lives. Every once in a while though, a specific moment reveals those truths about our Father’s character in a new way .

Over spring break the Lord allowed me to witness such a moment. I spent the week in Hawaii visiting my sister. The trip was full of relaxation, just taking in all the beauty found on that island chain. But I also went to Hawaii with an anxious heart… a heart full of loose ends needing to be laid at the feet of my Father. Satan was quietly planting doubts in my mind about this upcoming Africa trip. And He was really beginning to gain a foothold in a battle about where I would place my trust.

One morning we took a helicopter tour of Hawaii. A bird’s eye view of paradise makes for a great memory. The scenery was incredibly diverse, ranging from thousand foot cliffs to soft sand beaches. I saw waterfalls and jungles, whales, and even a volcano. Though each sight proved to be a testimony of God’s existence, none of these sights compared to one defining moment. As we hovered over the Pacific Ocean, steam was rising off the coastline of the island. In the distance, lava was creeping its way downhill toward the crashing waves.  As the waves collided with the lava, it cooled, forming new land. Talk about seeing something you’ve never witnessed before – that was definitely a first for me.

It was not until a while later that I recognized what actually was happening in that moment. Yes, new land was being formed. So what’s the big deal? The big deal is that my God was in control of that lava. My God was forming that dry land RIGHT BEFORE MY VERY EYES. He wasn’t just in control of creation when He spoke all things into existence thousands of years ago. He is actively in control of it now – He is a Creating God. That memory has made Scripture about creation come alive for me. That living Scripture reminds me of the power and protection found in God. Seeing God creating something new, reminded me that He is still alive, He is still in control, and He is still intimately involved in who I am.

If He takes time and care in forming the dry land, how much more so will He take care of His children? I believe my heavenly Father to be the one true God, because no other God can hold the depths of the earth in his hands and still have more than enough room left over to hold me and all of life’s loose ends in those same two hands.

One response to “A Creating God”

  1. Dear Abbey, I’m trusting that today, He is holding the loose ends of your life in His hands. It was good to hear your voice recently. Take Care, Love, Mom
