“Only God can make an image of God’s self…
And God did.
Look in the mirror or look in the slums.”

Good day, all! and welcome! I’m so glad to finally figure out how to get on here and post something and say hello to y’all (I’m not from the deep south, but I did just return from training in Georgia). Actually, I’m from upstate New York originally (no where near the city), and have lived in Vermont for the last couple of years (I’ve been going to Green Mountain College, which if any of you have read Donald Miller’s Blue Like Jazz, is probably the most comparable school to Reed College–the school Don went to–that I have ever seen or heard of). Wow…I’m sorry, I don’t know what’s up with all the parenthetical writing today.
Anywho…I think Becca built me up a bit in her 1512 hours post (if I were better at math, I’d let you know how many hours are left until I meet you from right now), but she is an amazing woman of God. We are all in for such a summer together as most likely none of us has ever experienced before.
So, one thing I will challenge you to start praying now is this: Lord, how may I serve you today? I know I will meet you in the faces of those around me; help me to treat you well.
This summer is meaning some pretty hefty sacrifices on all of our parts, and I am so excited to get to share this experience with you. Remember, “there is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13). Let’s lay it down this summer, guys (we are laying down our lives for these two months, and taking up His…that is what your signing up for, and He is smiling at your decision to follow His call). We’re in this for Him. And I want to love Jesus in the faces of the people we will be serving like He’s never been loved before. He deserves our all.

Oh, and another bit of homework for you (this is important): Get fit. To paraphrase Bob Marley, our feet are our only carriage. Once we’re in J-Bay, we will be walking and walking and walking, upwards of ten miles a day most days, so start working this out in your lungs and legs today. If you need some sort of regimented plan or something to do this, let me know.

See you in a few, ladies and gents!

Grace, Peace, and Love to you all,
Harold.

Oh, and PS, one more thing…don’t think, “I’m going to Africa, it’s going to be hot!” It’s not. It is winter there. Think warmish when deciding the few pieces of clothing you will be fitting into your suitcase.
